Essential Oils to Support Your Body and Mind

With beautiful trees and flowers blooming everywhere you turn and the bright, radiating sun warming up our world, it’s no secret that spring is finally here! This is the time when most of us prepare our homes and our gardens for the freshness of the outdoors, where we welcome in the new, and soak up what Mother Nature has to offer.

Today, we’ll share with you some of our favorite springtime essential oils and oil blends that can help you naturally fight the effects of pollen, the harmful rays of the sun, as well as just welcoming the fresh floral fragrances of spring into your home!

The Ultimate Allergy Reliever

Unfortunately for many of us, the arrival and beauty of spring can be lost on those who suffer from seasonal allergies, especially once that pollen hits the air. Over-the-counter allergy medications oftentimes have unwanted side-effects and can make you more bleary-eyed than you started! Luckily, there are essential oils that can support your body’s defense system against allergens and they are a safe and effective formulas that can really make a difference.

Lemon + Lavender + Peppermint

This powerful combination of essential oils can either be diffused in your home or made into a topical application.

For diffusing, follow your diffuser’s instructions and add a few drops of each for indoor allergy relief. A car diffuser works great on the go, but if you don’t have one, don’t worry! Wet a cotton ball with your essential oil blend and stick it in the air vent of your car for on-the-go relief!

To use topically, try a roller applicator or for one-time use, mix with a carrier oil in the palm of your hand. Apply this wonderful lemon, lavender, and peppermint blend to your neck, the bridge of your nose, temples, forearms, or behind the ears for refreshing allergy relief.

Breathe Easy!

Once you’ve battled the pollen and other springtime allergens, you may find that a stuffy nose is also a by-product of allergies. This can really be a nuisance, but you don’t have to suffer! Essential oils can clear your passages and provide you with optimal relief from your stuffy nose!

Lemongrass + Eucalyptus + Lavender

This trio should be your go-to remedy for stuffy, congested noses. Our favorite method of using this blend of essential oils is to put them in a diffuser, then create a tent with a towel over your head and breathe in the soothing vapors. You can also use a diffuser necklace or dilute this blend with a carrier oil and apply topically on the neck and chest.

Staying Safe in the Sun

Avoiding the harmful rays of the sun is a critical factor in staying healthy and avoiding deadly cancer of the skin. However, most sunscreens contain other harmful ingredients and additives that many people prefer to stay away from as well. Furthermore, all-natural sunscreens can be pricey, ranging upwards of $20 for a small bottle. Too much!

Essential oils can offer amazing protective benefits from the sun’s harmful rays. There are many “recipes” that offer different levels of SPF and this depends on which ingredients you choose. In addition to using essential oils, there are a variety of carrier oils that offer their own SPF and can boost the effects of a homemade serum. Here’s a breakdown of approximate SPF ratings for commonly used sunscreen ingredients:

  • Coconut Oil: SPF 4-6
  • Almond Oil: SPF 5
  • Shea Butter: SPF 4-6

  • Carrot Seed Oil: SPF 35-40
  • Red Raspberry Seed Oil: 25-50

Simply choose a carrier oil, whether it be coconut, almond, or shea butter, and add 5-20 drops (depending on how much you are making) of either carrot seed or red raspberry seed oil. This essential oil sunscreen needs to be re-applied more often than regular sunscreen and is not waterproof, so adjust your routine accordingly.

Freshen Up with Springtime Scents

When spring is in the air, you can usually smell it. The fresh flowing breeze, the blooming flowers releasing an intoxicating scent, perhaps even linens drying on the line. Sometimes you can bring that wonderful springtime aroma in by opening your windows, but when that’s not possible, you can use the powerful, aromatic smells of essential oils to infuse your home with bright, fresh, floral aromas. Here are some of our favorite springtime combinations:

Lemon + Lavender + Rosemary

Bergamot + Ylang Ylang + Grapefruit

Orange + Cedarwood + Ginger

Lemon + Grapefruit + Geranium

These scent combinations are simply divine! Diffusing them is the best way to freshen your home, and don’t be afraid to play with some of your favorite scents to create a combination that you just love!

There is so much to love about spring! It signals the beginning of beautiful things to come. We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about the various ways essential oils can make a difference in your springtime routine.

Remember, while essential oils are great, they cannot diagnose, treat, or prevent serious illness and their use should always be through an educated approach.

Happy oiling!
